Went to visit Mama Nokhaya and her Sunday School kids that meet at her preschool everyday around 4 pm. Their is an average of 100 kids that come to Children's' Church everyday.

Had another day with the ladies bonding together.

On Freedom we went for a hike and then explored Kalk Bay. There was people from Germany filming the seal and trying to capture the heart of Cape Town before the World Cup comes in June.

The students had another protest about having better education by needing more books for their library.

Young from Korea is visiting and doing a short-term mission trip. She is Dental Hygienist and she came with me this week to teach the kids how to brush their teeth.

Young and I went to a park for a break and saw this animal we never saw before? Does anybody know what it is? I thought it was a weasel?

There is a measles outbreak this month in Cape Town, therefore, the nurses were going around making sure the kids were vaccinated.

They learned a song called I am special because Jesus made them. These kids were checking to see if their friends have certain body parts that God created them to have.

In the second week of March they learned about people and places at work. This little boy drew a police officer and his vehicle.

They made thumb prints of their family.

Kids are learning how to write the letter a during their phonic lesson on Tuesday.

This month they talked about themselves and how each person is so special in God's eyes. He only made one of them and then broke the mold after he made you!

This year most of the schools have a higher attendance record then in the previous years. They are now averaging 60 to 125 students in a small building. Usually the ratio is one teacher to every 30-40 kids. It is so hard to manage this, but they do it!

Anele started our training time with a devotion and then made all teachers hold hands to pray for their schools.

JANUARY 2010 (SECOND HALF)

Ubu the car is now sitting in the Auto Kingdom Garage. Tobi hit his head in the windshield, but overall nobody was hurt seriously.

Tobi was in a car accident and hit this truck.

This is Mama Nosandla's nephew who got a scholarship. His mother died in a car accident this holiday season and now Mama Nosandla is the main care giver.

Lilamandla is one of the students who got a scholarship. His Mom is a single parent who is the principal of her school.

Mocha Club video gang visited a children's church at SST and participated in some of their songs.

Mocha Club hired Charlie and Daniel to make video's of all of what Mocha Club supports. They have been to over 7 African countries in 3 months.

DECEMBER AND JANUARY

On Christmas Day we went to Pastor Mfundo's house and had a Sunday School service. Afterwards we gave out gifts that the Gordon's Bay Baptist Church donated.

Gordon's Bay Baptist Church donated over a hundred gifts to some of the Sunday School kids in Khayletisha. This little girl got a dressed that was just her size.

Then we discovered that another girl got a dress just her size also.

I was all hitched up to go tandem paragliding, but unfortunately the wind changed directions and my trip was canceled.

On Sunday after the graduation we also celebrated Tata Milgawe's retirement as the pastor of his church. He told me that morning that he didn't want to wake up because he didn't want to retire.

At the Kulangkolwazi school the teacher's are using their Xhosa Bibles for the first time.

Some of the teachers already had a Xhosa bible so they choose to get an English Bible instead.

Sinoxolo got 2 Xhosa bibles and 1 in English.

Anele had her Graduation on November the 7th at her school. They rented a tent, but it was too small for everybody. Some people had to stand and their wasn't even enough room for the graduates to do their presentation.

Mama Nokhaya broke down and spent the money she has been saving for a new floor to buy a Saxaphone to play at the Graduation.

Took the main actors from the Kulangkolwazi school to have a dress rehearsal at the hall that we will be having the graduation.

I had to bring the kids back and forth from other schools to practice together for the Graduation. I had 11 students and I teacher in the car. Thanks goodness I didn't have to drive far.

I had the 4 pastors from Transkei for a couple hours and took them to participate at a preschool. This one pastor was taking a little nap and the children tried to wake him up!

I took Nokhaya to the beach to do bible study and she wanted to sit on a rock and enjoy the water, but the wave caught her by surpise! I just couldn't stop laughing...

Zandile turned 24 this past week and I took her out to the beach for her birthday!

I was just walking through the grocery store and Mandisa spotted me to come over. I was shocked to see her working because we were praying for her to get a job! Thanks for your prayers!

While their school was being renovated the students and teachers had to stay outside. (Good thing the weather was nice that day)

Christy from the Mocha Club joined us for a week and became a part of the family!

Beth (a missionary from Japan for 40 years and is also on the board of African Leadership in Canada) brought 11 ladies from Canada to do a short-term mission trip.

While going to Robben Island with the ladies you can see the sight of the stadium where some of the games will be played during the World Cup here in June 2010. Behind the stadium is Lions Head and Signal Hill.

On our last day the Ready to Read class played on the beach.

A bunch of the missionaries went on a field trip to the west coast national park to see a bunch of wild flowers and ended up seeing wild animals in their natural habitat. (Zebra, Ostrich, Kudoo, Antelope, Cape buffalo, turtle, etc)

September is a great time to come visit South Africa because all the flowers are blooming.

It's whale season this month and on my day off Rose and I went whale watching. We saw a whale poke half is body out and then his tale. Of course I was too slow to catch it on the camera.

One afternoon the students from several high schools did a friendly protest on the streets about having more books and libraries in their schools.

When it is the last Monday of the month after devotions we have a time of fellowship, eating and praying for one ministry. This time we were laying hands on Chris and praying for the Rainbow soccer ministry.

Pastor John joined me at the Everite Reading class. He was Vanna when we played the game called the Wheel of Fortune.

The Calgary and German team joined me in the morning at a school. (The Calgary team painted the the wall behind us.)

The kids were having running races when I went to visit the Green Point school.

This month's theme we were learning about the Farm and the City. The kids drew a city apartment with chalk on black paper.

Spring has sprung and these lillies are popping up everywhere especially in Khayelitsha. I think the Lilly of the Valley Association (LOVEa) was named after these lillies.

Chris from the sports ministry had a baby boy!

Helped start the church at the Mfuleni school. The service started with over 60 children attending and eventually a few adults came.

Calgary team spent the morning with the highschool kids while the Seattle team was in Transkei.

Went to visit one of the childrens' church camp. They had over 120 kids attend. They still ran the camp with only 1/2 the money raised. They are trusting and believing that God will provide the other 1/2.

An average of 100 kids have been attending childrens' church everyday at the site where the Mocha club was building the preschool.

After my reading class on Wednesdays I've been visiting each students family and playing games with them.

This is Xolisa, the new teacher at Mfuleni. For almost a whole year this school sat empty but now it has finally opened with 17 students attending.

Second half of the story from the newsletter:

We were supposed to go to the beach the following day, but because it was so windy, we went home early. I ended up doing a devotional before we left where I spoke on John 15: 1-17. I have been memorizing this passage with the girls in the mission house and God led me to share it with the teachers because it was a good analogy of what LOVEa ministry is here to do for them. I told them that right now God is pruning (through the Teachers’ Camp) the branches that are not producing and making them fruitful. In verse 4, it says if they remain in me, I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. If the teachers partner with LOVEa ministry, do the training and implement it, they will bear much fruit. Without it they will wither and die. In the end I told them that their ultimate goal is to love each other because that is the greatest command of all.

I overspent and went over my budget for the camp, but it was worth it all. Money is no object when you are doing God’s work. For the rest of the month I will visit each school to see how they are implementing what they have learned during the camp. I am so glad that I have no expectations as I visit each school because I found that I ended up just organizing a few of the schools. They were so disorganized, missing many resources and having so many internal school conflicts. We will try for next month. It is so much for the teachers right now because they have never worked so hard in their lives. Pray that they will realize that this training is valuable to them in order for their schools to succeed.

I was unable to stay at Mama Nosandla’s house these past Mondays because her garage isn’t ready yet. Pray that the garage will be finished soon so that my car will be safe while I stay with her.

I was unable to teach my reading class this past Wednesday because I was sick, but was able to visit my past students.

We networked with another group at the camp called Lighthouse. They were working with addictions in youth. They were amazing. We hope to use their services one day.

Moments with my car:

Since driving my car, I’ve had a few blonde moments. My blonde moments usually come when I am tired and forget that I am driving a manual car and forget to shift. The other blonde moment was when I was parked and I couldn’t get out. I kept on going forwards and hitting this brick wall. I then went outside to see what the problem was, but couldn’t find one. I then realized I forgot to shift into reverse. Thank goodness there was a brick wall preventing me from going any further. Pray that I get better at driving a stick shift.

I have also received 3 speeding tickets this month. Two of them were from Elijah driving my car to Pretoria. I feel that Elijah shouldn’t pay for the speeding ticket because he was doing a service for all of us by getting us to Missions Fest and he was expected to speed to get us to our destination. I never had a speeding ticket in my life until I arrived in South Africa and I better smarten up because it’s costing me a fortune (approx $400 rand a ticket).

2004 1.40i Toyota Corolla

I was going to buy an small Renault at first, but when Elijah (AL Mechanic) looked at it he said it wasn't worth buying it. Therefore, we looked for another car for a week and found this Toyota at a big car lot. My plan was to buy a car for about $40000 rand ($6000 Can), but went over my budget by $20000 rand ($2000 can). By the time I registered it and fixed a few things on it I payed about $60000 rand ($8000 can). The system is so corrupt here. I had to pay the car dealership extra money under the table so that my car would pass the road worthy test and that people can drive without insurance in S. Africa. Yes, I did buy insurance and they said that my car is worth more than I bought it for ($720000). Well, at least I can now drive, but will have to spend less on other things.

Mama Nosandla is the Principle of one of the preschools and is also the pastor of her church. I had asked her to see if she was interested in becoming one of the coordinators of LOVEa ministry. I told her that it will take two years to train her. She would have to quit being the principle of her school because the LOVEa ministry is a full time job, but can still be a pastor of her church. She would also need to go back to school for ECE training. Pray that God will help her with this decision.

On Sunday Feb 1st, Joy and I went to AL campsite to fast and pray for the evening. We have this great campsite, but can't use it because the neighbors are in a legal battle with AL because they don't want us to use the public road access that we share with them. Pray that this will be resolved soon. The picture above is Pastor Focus and his son Daniel. They are the caretakers of the campsite and they are from Zimbabwe. We passed on two bibles from Paul that was in their language. He was so excited because he's never had a bible in his language before and couldn't stop reading it. He said it was the best gift he'd ever received.

Someleze Educare Centre was the last school to be built that I never saw.

Pray for the Mfluweni Educare Centre because they haven't started their school yet, even though most of the schools started in late January.

They even have a bird's nest growing in their school.

This is another new school in Bekela and we are putting tiles on the preschool.

JANUARY 2009:

Wow, I can't believe it's been 2 weeks already and so much has happened. Before I left to go to South Africa I was picked up by Jen and Beth and they took me out for dinner and for a walk near the airport.

Found out that Doug Fordham and Bruce Christensen were on the same flight as me going to London. They were on their way to India to do a mission's trip.

Went to a coordinator's retreat for 3 days right after I landed in Cape Town. It was an amazing time before we started the new year with our ministries. We had two guest speaker's talk about Leadership and Spiritual discipline. It was a great time of bonding and fellowshipping with one another.

Went visiting the schools and teachers in Khayelitsha. They were excited to see me and noticed how much weight I gained since I left. I am now making an effort to loose the weight by running, swimming and hiking each day.

I was very impressed when I went to visit some of the schools. They made an effort to make their schools better with very little resources and money. It's great to see what they can do when I was gone for 6 months.

These are my roommates Joy and Susanna. Joy is the coordinator of 43 Sunday Schools in Khayelitsha and Susanna just started a new ministry in Kraaifontein doing Sunday Schools and Youth ministries.

Paul and Yong Woo just came back from Zimbabwe. This is 3 trillion Zimbabwian dollars and it's worth only $1.00 US. They said that the situation in Zimbabwe is getting worse.

African Leadership America came to visit and see what's happening with the ministries that they are supporting.

I am still looking for a car! Today I sold my first car (which was a lemon) for $14000 rand, even though I spend over $400000 after fixing everything. Oh well, I am just glad I got rid of it. Pray that I find a car or a small truck asap because I can't start the LOVEa ministry without a car.

Oct., Nov. and Dec. 2008 Prayer Update

PRAYER UPDATE FOR OCTOBER, NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2008

Whoa, these months are just flying by and I can’t believe its December already. In the month of October and November I started to raise support by doing speaking engagements in churches. My first speaking engagement was at the Chinese Presbyterian Church in Vancouver. I was the main speaker and had to speak for 25mins. I spoke on Eccl. 3:1-9, 11 and I was very emotional. By the end of it my friend Tobi told me that I spoke for 40 mins. Whew, I was glad that was over and I think I did ok. I then spoke on the topic about social and relational and how it relates to God’s Kingdom at the African Leadership retreat in Seattle in October. In December I finished sending out my prayer/support letters. I have attached it below and pray that God’s people will respond and partnership with me. I am going by faith that God will provide for my every need even though I haven’t raised all my support to go back to S. Africa yet.

During the week days I have kept busy working at Safeway as a baker’s helper half of the week and the other half I scanned documents onto microfishe for Escan Data. After working at these two jobs I realized that I am truly meant to be a teacher and how I miss teaching. I also learned how hard people work. In the end I came to love the people I worked with and appreciate the friendship that I made.

I am now in Campbell River spending the rest of the holiday season with my family. May everyone have a blessed Christmas remembering Christ’s birth and a wonderful New Year. Please pray for the following:

· Found two part-time jobs. Pray that I had a positive Christian influence while I worked there.

· I am thankful of the many opportunities that I can share in churches. Pray that I will make a positive impact and touch the heart of other’s to partnership with me in South Africa.

· Continue to pray for the Lilly of the Valley Educare Centres and their teachers as they take a well deserved break.

My dearest brothers and sisters in Christ:

In Ecclesiastes 3, it says, “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heave.” (vs1) “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” (vs11). These verses have truly marked my experiences this past year.

As most of you know I have been in South Africa building a curriculum for the African Leadership preschools and training the teachers in the townships of Khayelitsha. I have also been involved in children’s churches and youth ministries, in the construction of preschools and in other areas where help was needed.

Sadly, at the end of June 2008 my oldest brother died and I had to go home immediately. I was truly torn because I wanted to be and knew I should be with my family here in Canada to support them, but I also mourned for the ministry in South Africa I had come to love and would have to let it go. But God had a purpose for all things in His time.

As I reflect back on my year in South Africa and on my time I have now spent back in Canada, one things keeps coming back to my mind and has made a great impact in my life. I have come to a realization of the important relationships with people play in our daily lives. It’s about what you’ve accomplished or how much money you make. It’s not about the car you drive or whether you wear the latest fashions. It’s not about the high pay job or climbing the social ladder. It’s about the people in God’s Kingdom!!! Relationships are what life is all about. Matthew 22:37 tells us that this is the first and greatest commandment and the second is to love our neighbors as ourselves. Time is the best investment we can give to relationships. Whenever we give time, we are making a sacrifice which is the essence of love.

In the beginning of January 2009 I plan to go back to South Africa and continue what I have started. My future goals are:

· To train, equip, support and spiritually lead the teachers, students and schools.

· To train local teachers to become coordinators of Lilly of the Valley Educare Association so that in the future that they can take over the ministry.

· To ultimately fulfill my life mission by glorifying God and enjoying Him through knowing and serving Jesus Christ.

· To live life to the fullest by embracing it as an adventure to be lived.

· To be a woman of influence by making lasting impact on others and to invest and mobilize a future generation of people to live out their purpose for God’s kingdom!

Subbing at the Wind and Tide Kindergarten and some of my old students came to visit me at lunch time. Haley is only in grade 5 and she towers over me already and her sister Rebecca is not far behind.

July, August and September Prayer Update 2008

PRAYER UPDATE FOR JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2008

Life has somewhat gone back to a routine again and I am very thankful for that! Since I’ve been back in Canada I’ve allowed myself to just step back and do nothing, which also meant that my spiritual life was not happening either. God was still presence and doing little miracles in my life even though I let go of him for awhile. I spent July and August on Vancouver Island with my family and I am now on the mainland for about 4 months. Since being back I realize how important relationships are in sustaining a healthy lifestyle in all aspects. I am truly blessed to have amazing family and friends who have taken care of me, encouraged me, loved me and prayed for me. I am truly lost without them. Please pray for the following and read my blog of the amazing miracles that happened these past few months.

PRAISE ITEMS:

- Great support system with my church, family and friends.

- Special moments with my church, family and friends.

- For God’s presence in my life even though I let go of him for awhile.

- For the little miracles that God has bestowed upon me since I’ve been back in Canada.

- Had my teeth ache finally fixed by a dentist.

PRAYER ITEMS:

- To have the desire and the need to do my devotions and have a daily relationship with Jesus.

- To find a job that pays well.

- To find the money to pay for the rest of my dentist bills.

- To start finding monthly support to go back to South Africa.

- To find more prayer partners.

- To be active in my church and my local community around me.

- To pray for the Lilly of the Valley Association in South Africa (Teachers, students, etc)

- To pray for the missionaries and all the ministries in African Leadership.
