June 2008

JUNE

I am in Campbell River in my sister’s house as I write June’s update. It seems so surreal to be here right now. Just two weeks ago I was in South Africa! A lot has happened this month and it’s been bittersweet. I had to go home early because my oldest brother Sam had a brain aneurism, which caused a stroke and he was in a coma for almost two weeks. I left South Africa on Wednesday June 18th and flew back with the short-term mission team from the States to England. I had a 10 hour lay over and I decided to go into London to the Art Gallery. (I really wanted to go and see live theatre, but there was not enough time so I went to the art gallery because it was free!) I landed in Calgary Thursday night and was happily greeted by Sarah and Helen, my roommates from South Africa, who I was staying with for a couple of days. That evening we went to see fellow short-term missionaries from South Africa and I even saw Zeta who was a long-term missionary for African Leadership. The following day I found out that my brother had died at 1am in the morning and that the rest of my family arrived the same day late that afternoon. I ended up staying with one of Sammy’s good friends so that the family would be together. Within the weekend my family got Sammy’s things in order and we planned a memorial service for him on Monday June 23rd. Sammy’s church was very supportive. His pastor did the service and provided the food. I think his whole church came to the memorial. Sammy’s friend also provided the church to have the service in because Sammy’s church didn’t have a building. The memorial was done well. My family felt very supportive by everyone involved. I was very thankful that my roommate for 4 years had happened to be in Calgary and came to the memorial, my roommates, Sarah and Helen, from South Africa came and I even saw Jolene and Debbie who used to go to Parkland. I flew back to Campbell River on Wednesday June 25th and the next day went to Hannah’s and Kia’s last day of school while Grace and Kent went to Reyna’s middle school assembly where she got a plaque for having straight A’s all year round. (Gush, gush, I am so proud of my nieces) On Sunday Hannah had a birthday party at the swimming pool and I helped her make her birthday cake. On Tuesday it was Canada Day and I spent it with my family going to see the parade and the fireworks at night.

I taught Pastor Jun’s child Esung and his friends how to read and I spent the last day with them having a snowball and cannon ball fight with them.

On Monday June 16th was a holiday and I decided to have a LOVEa celebration for all the teachers before I left.

One of the teachers, who was a singer, invited her church to do the entertainment.

The last school I saw being built by the Mocha Club from the States.

I took out my grade 4 reading class to bowling and ice-cream for our last day of class. They have never bowled before, but they were more interested in the arcade games.

Taking a picture of Trafalgar square in front of the national art gallery.

Artoro's and Nena's kids playing hockey in their front yard. Sammy's friends that we were staying with.

Last day in Calgary we went to Kananaskis and saw tons of animals like this moose.
