September Weeks 5 and 6

Week 5 and 6

Day 30: Wednesday September 5th

Today we went back to the mat factory. We hired two locals to dig the sand and mix the cement. The rest of us helped by setting the cement in place and making it smooth. In the evening Pastor Ohm invited us for dinner to welcome me to South Africa.

Serving soup to the Seniors.

Ruth and Hannah

Day 31: Thursday September 6th

My car finally arrived at the house around 8:30. When we inspected the car the trunk was still leaking, therefore, we sent it back to get fixed. I am really feeling uneasy about buying this car and I really don’t know what I am doing. Then Pastor Ohm offered me to buy Howard’s Hyundai car. Now I am really confused? In the afternoon I escorted a church group from S. Carolina to some of the preschools in K and to the soup kitchen. They had some great suggestions in helping improve the quality of the preschool, but I told them that there were no funds to do anything. Hopefully they will get their church involved in supporting the Preschools by donating and raising funds. In the evening I taught the girls the second book in the reading series.

City Park

Day 32: Friday September 7th

Before I bought the Mazda, my friend Ryan suggested that I ask for a discount or a warranty of no leakage on the trunk for 1 year. When the dealership phoned they gave me the 1 year warranty, but I had to decide what car to buy the Mazda or the Hyundai? As I weighed down the pro’s and con’s it came down to the price and everybody suggested that the Hyundai was the better choice. I then cancelled buying the Mazda and had to pay for the registration fee of $250 rand. The Hyundai wasn’t ready for me to buy yet because another missionary was using it because his car was getting fixed. I found out that this Hyundai has a few problems. The defroster and heater doesn’t work, you need to put oil in it every 500 km, the bumper was just
replaced because it was in a minor car accident and it has a hard time starting. (H
mmmm, do I really want to buy this car?). Oh how I hate this process!!!! In the afternoon Pastor Ohm took us downtown where he had to do some errands and then we went beachcombing. We saw a lot of sea life.

Honest reading the book I gave him.

Helping Paul's Small Group

Day 33: Saturday September 8th

I joined the American team again and helped them with their Sunday School lessons. While at the second Sunday School class I met up with Honest again and promised him a book to read. Unfortunately he gave it back to me for safe keeping during the S.S. class and I forgot to give it back to him. At 12:00 I helped with the camp planning session and then to the youth service. Afterwards we invited ourselves to Phillips house for dinner. As I was getting ready for bed I saw a flea jumping all over my bed. I quickly spayed my bed with bug spray. I hope I got that bugger!

Mandela's Cell

Day 34: Sunday September 9th

This morning we went to Pastor Mfundo’s church and we had a guest speaker speak on the fear of the Lord. We were then dropped off at the waterfront to take the ferry to Robben Island. This is where Mandela was held in prison for about 17 years. In the evening Angie picked us up and we had dessert at the Green Dolphin where they had live Jazz music. Just as we were about to leave a man stopped by and started to talk to us. His name was Terry, and investor broker for Standard Bank. By the end of the conversation Angela shared the gospel to him and I tried to see if he could donate money to the preschools.

Day 35: Monday September 10th

This morning Zeta asked me to drive the Hyundai myself and follow him in his car to the mechanics. I decided to take on this challenge, but the car wouldn’t start. I then had to push it out onto the street for Zeta to start the car. By the time he came back he was being towed by the truck. Andrea and I ended up spending most of our time at the college just hanging around and catching up on work. Once I got home the room that was designated for me was finally available. I started to clean it up and make it my own place.

Angie (Brazil), Paul (Korea), Me, Zeta (Korea)

Day 36: Tuesday September 11th

I stayed home today because I had driving lessons with an actual instructor at 12:30 pm. In between my driving lessons I organized my stuff and ironed all my clothes. I finally feel that I have my own space now. At 5:00 pm Paul and I drove Andrea to the airport because she is starting school in Stanford soon. All the short-term missionaries are now gone and it’s just Paul, Zeta, Angie and me left. It sure is quite now.

Day 37: Wednesday September 12th

Today I went car shopping with Zeta. I drove his car so that I can get more practice driving a standard car. Of course this car stalled on me again at an intersection and I had to push it again to get it started. By the end of our car shopping day we liked the car that I first test drove 3 weeks ago. It is a 1994 automatic Toyota Camry for $32000 rand. The car is old and it’s fully loaded. The only hesitation I have of this car is that it’s so big. I feel like its boat!!!

Day 38: Thursday September 13th

I stayed home again because I had another driving lesson with Edward. We practiced parking on a standard car. After my driving lessons I asked Edward if he could drop me off at the dealership where the Camry was so that I can test drive one more time before I buy the car. Fernando, the Mechanic drove with me and I asked him if we can practice parking it. It was ok, but I still need time to practice parking it.

================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================================

Day 39: Friday September 14th

Today I decided to buy the Camry, but they tired to charge me an extra $1200 rand for the registration fee. I told them that I already paid $250 rand to register the last car and why were they charging me $1200 rand. By the end of it the owner dropped it down to $500 rand. Boy oh boy do I hate this process! Fernando, the Mechanic then had to go with me to the bank to see if I could get $32500 rand out of the bank to pay for the car. The banks wouldn’t let me take whole amount out, therefore, I had to use the Atm and the most they could let me get out is $6000 rand. (of course the bank in Canada will charge me $3.00 for every transaction.) In the end
Fernando told me never to say out loud the amount of money I want, but to always write it down. Opps! Late in the afternoon I helped the neighbour by watching their 92 year old aunt while she went grocery shopping with her friend. The aunt is Portuguese and speaks very little English. Of course she loved talking to me and most of the time I didn’t understand because she mixed up her language all the time. Overall, I had a nice visit with the neighbours.

Some of the highschool girls brought their kids

Paul's group doubled in a week!

Day 40: Saturday September 15th

This morning I spent it with Angela and went to her Sunday school class. I then went to the youth worship time and this time they had over 50 young people there. It was amazing.

Casta, Tami, Me, Paul

Day 41: Sunday September 16th

I went to University of Cape Town’s church with Paul, Casta and Tami. We then had McDonald’s for lunch and brought to a park to eat. In the afternoon I went to the internet for a couple of hours.

You can see all of Cape Town and Robben Island from Signal Hill

The closet beach from the campsite

Day 42: Monday September 17th

Today Mama Veronica shared about 2 Chronicles 20:15. (For the battle is not yours, but God’s.) She did a really good job even though it wasn’t her turn to share. Afterwards I went to a youth meeting and ended up volunteering being a small group leader because there is such a need. (What have I done!) Then I accompanied Zeta and Lucky to see a camp site. On the way to the campsite we stopped by and went to see the view at signal hill.

===================================================================================================================================================

Day 43: Tuesday September 18th

Today I spent most of my time with Paul doing errands. In the evening we made a youth banner to advertise the youth worship service on Saturday from 2-4 pm.
